You are making your children dumber.  If you do not have adequate ventilation in your home, you are impairing the cognitive function of your children and yourself.  This came as a shock to me as a father of four homeschooled children when I measured the COlevels in our own home in Kingwood earlier this year.

Like most homes in Kingwood, our central air conditioning system contains no ventilation to bring fresh air into our home.  We have a relatively new home that has been sealed fairly well to improve energy efficiency, but this has the downside of trapping stale air indoors.

With no good way for fresh air to get into our home, we are like bugs in a bottle with no holes punched in the lid.  We all know that one has to punch holes in the lid of a bug bottle if the bugs are to survive, but why don’t we apply this same logic to our own homes?

I know what you’re thinking.  You haven’t heard of anyone keeling over dead from lack of ventilation in their home lately, so what’s the big deal, right?  Carbon dioxide or CO2 is a byproduct of breathing.  As humans and animals breathe, they use up the oxygen in the air and emit CO2.  Once CO2 levels rise above certain levels–and oxygen correspondingly decreases–cognitive function is impaired and other symptoms arise, including headaches, breathing difficulties, nausea, fatigue, strained eyes, and itchy skin.

Get your air quality tested today to ensure your home, school, or business is providing healthy air to you and your loved ones.  Don’t make your children dumber by ignoring this issue.
