What is a combination boiler, and why should we like them? The name says it all. A combination boiler, otherwise known as a combi boiler, is a wall-mounted heating system that combines the functions of your conventional boiler and your water heater tank. Just like every type of equipment, there are benefits and drawbacks to having them. What are combi boiler’s pros and cons? Find out below!

Benefits:

  • They are highly efficient. About 90 percent of the fuel gas going into the boiler is used. That is much more than older conventional boilers.
  • They are compact and save space. Combi boilers can fit into almost any room in the house because of their size. Having these boilers limits the usage and space of a storage cylinder.
  • Combi boilers are more affordable to install compared to other heating systems. They are cheaper because they don’t require extra pipes, separate tanks, or cylinders.
  • They give you immediate and constant hot water. The water comes straight from your main water supply so that you can get boundless hot water without storing it.

Cons:

  • There can be a decrease in water pressure if more than one channel requires hot water simultaneously.
  • Combi boilers do not have a backup immersion heater that would heat the water if there was a breakdown. (A conventional boiler would still be able to provide hot water.) Not only would you not have hot water, but you would not have central heating either, unless you have an electric shower.
